For the first time in its history, the Super Bowl will be streamed live online in the US this Sunday. NFL fans can now catch the game from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on their computer screens and on mobile devices, too.
NBC will be live-streaming the Giants-Patriots Super Bowl XLVI on its site and also to Verizon phones. The NFL and NBC Sports have teamed up with Verizon for an NFL mobile application that will enable the livestreaming of the game on iOS4 and Android mobile devices.
The Super Bowl online livestreaming promises a lot of features that will probably give a more comprehensive coverage of the game. The features include:
- Exclusive online-only camera angles
- In-game highlights
- Exclusive sideline reports from Michelle Tafoya
- In-game chat with Mike Florio
- Live in-game tweets by Jimmy Fallon
- Super Bowl commercials available on-demand
The Super Bowl XLVI live online coverage will start at 2 p.m. ET Sunday. The game will be streamed via a Super Bowl Extra Player and will be presented in high definition through Smooth Streaming, which is a feature of Microsoft Silverlight.

Aside from the livestreaming of the actual game, there are other ways that digital content can enhance the Super Bowl game on Sunday for the viewers.

ESPN has some mobile products that might just prove useful during the Super Bowl game, especially for those who just want to be updated on scores. The ESPN ScoreCenter for the iPhone and iPod Touch and similar products are available at their ESPN mobile products site.
As expected, advertisers will go all out to take advantage of the most watched US television show which drew an estimated 111 million viewers last season. So, aside from that $3.5 million 30-seconder television spot, some companies choose to engage consumers via apps and online games.
Fans can win freebies like special content, free music, and a chance to win major prizes by capturing snippets from those catchy audio of Super Bowl commercialsusing the popular app Shazam: [link]. About a third of Super Bowl ads will use Shazam for better interaction with consumers including Toyota (which will give away two Camrys), Pepsi, and Best Buy.
Yahoo also has a social app named IntoNow [link] which, aside from featuring exclusive content for the game, is tied up with Pepsi in a campaign that will give viewers a chance to receive a Pepsi MAX for life. Pepsi MAX happens to be the official soft drink of the NFL.
