Highest megapixel camera phone record breaker? That’s the Nokia 808 Pureviewsmartphone which has a 41-megapixel sensor. Yes, you read that right, that is not 4 point 1 but 41.
Not content with doubling the 16-megapixel camera of HTC Titan II, Nokia upped the ante for phone cameras and even manages to surpass many point and shoot and top of the line digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras as well.
The Nokia 808 Pureview is undoubtedly one of the hottest gadgets at the Mobile World Congress 2012 which opened Monday in Barcelona.
The phone’s 41-megapixel camera has a Carl Zeiss optics lens and new pixel oversampling technology. It does not take actual 41MP images, but uses the extra megapixels to capture more information for better, sharper images.
The 808 Pureview takes 5 megapixel images in the automatic mode, with seven pixels of information condensed into every pixel, resulting in very sharp and accurate images. With the new compression system of Nokia, these 5 megapixel images averages only 1 MB in size.
In its creative mode, users can shoot 16:9 format images at 34 megapixels and 4:3 images at 38 megapixels, according to pcmag.com. At these high resolutions, users can capture an image and then zoom, crop, reframe or resize after the shot to highlight details. It is possible to blow up poster size pictures from high resolution images and still retain their clarity and sharpness. Other specs of the 808 Pureview include:
- Symbian Belle OS
- ISO up to 1600
- Adjustable exposure and white balance settings
- Xenon light for snap shots
- LED light ideal for video shots
- 1080p video recording at 15, 24, 25, and 30 frames per second
- 720p or VGA video
- 4x lossless zoom in 1080p mode and higher zoom in low-res modes
- Rich Recording mode for CD-like levels of quality for audio recording
- Dolby Headphone technology and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback
- 4-inch AMOLED display, nHD (640×360) resolution, with curved Gorilla Glass
- 512MB of RAM
- 16GB internal memory with microSD card slot
- 1.3 GHz single-core processor
- HDMI-out, WiFi, DLNA, GPS, and NFC
- USB On-The-Go
Nokia chose to run Symbian Belle OS on this phone, not Windows Phone, which just might dampen its acceptability in most markets. The Finnish company saidSymbian was chosen as its platform since the 808 Pureview has been five years in development, at a time when Windows Phone was not in the horizon of Nokia.
Nevertheless, Nokia said it might add this game-changing camera features to its Lumia line, which run on Windows Phone, in the future.
The 808 PureView phone has Nokia apps incorporated in the phone but some reviewers said the UI is not at par with Windows Phone nor Android.
With its best features focused on the camera function than on the phone itself, the Nokia 808 Pureview can be regarded by many as more of camera with a smartphone functionality than the other way around.
The phone will be priced at 450 euros or about US$340 and will hit the shelves in Europe this second quarter.
