Samsung Electronics announced today that more than 20 million of its popular smartphone Samsung Galaxy S II (Model GT-1900) have been sold worldwide. That translates to an average of 2 million handsets for the past 10 months since its release in April 2011.
The tremendous sales of the Galaxy S II has propelled Samsung to the top spot among smartphone makers, with a total 95 million units of Samsung smartphones shipped in 2011. The Korean tech giant managed to edge out rival Apple which shipped out a total of 93 million units last year, based on iSuppli data. On the other hand, Gartner says Apple is the world’s leading smartphone for the whole of 2011, capturing 19 per cent market share.
Whether Samsung takes the first or second spot in the smartphone market, the fact remains that Samsung Galaxy S II is the company’s flagship smartphone device. It is also one of the smartphones that got unanimous positive reviews from most online publications.
Engadget summed it all up when it gave Samsung Galaxy S II a glowing review in April 2011 with the statement:
It’s the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period.
Samsung Galaxy S II is an ultra slim smartphone at only 8.49 mm thick but its specs are heavy with pluses. It runs on Gingerbread and has a 1.2 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 SoC processor, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB flash memory. It features a Super AMOLED Plus display and an 8 megapixel rear camera with flash, autofocus and which is capable of full 1080p high definition video recording.
Samsung has relayed to TechRadar that it will not launch the successor to the S II at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona. Instead, the Galaxy S III will be unveiled at a separate Samsung event in the first half of the year.
